Músicas que antecederam o Gospel: There is a Balm in Gilead

     Bom dia povo de Deus! Hoje trago pra vocês um hino tão antigo, que não se conhece nem mesmo seu autor. É um black spiritual chamado "There Is a Balm in Gilead", e sua primeira aparição é incerta. Seu refrão é encontrado no hino "The Sinner's Cure", em uma seleção de músicas datada de 1853 e creditada à "Washington Glass", mas tem sua forma parecida com um hino de John Newton (autor de Amazing Grace), de 1779. Algumas partes do hino também aparecem em outras canções, o que mostra que há grande intertextualização entre eles.
     Uma versão mais recente da música, cantada por Mahalia Jackson, tem a seguinte letra:

     There is a balm in Gilead

To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin sick soul.

Some times I feel discouraged,
And think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again.

If you can’t preach like Peter,

Take my Hand, Precious Lord

     Lançada em 1956 por Mahalia Jackson, Take my Hand, Precious Lord foi composta por Thomas Dorsey depois da morte de sua esposa durante o parto e seu filho. Na música, Dorsey pede que o Senhor segure sua mão e o guie.
     Era a música favorita de Martin Luther King e foi cantada por grandes músicos, como Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin e Jim Reeves.

Gospel: As boas novas na música

     Fala galera! De um tempo pra cá venho postando algumas "Músicas que antecederam o Gospel", que você pode conferir clicando aqui. Certo, mas você sabe qual foi a primeira música gospel de todos os tempos? Afinal, o que é uma música gospel?
     Tudo começa quando o pianista Thomas Dorsey, compositor de diversos hits dos anos 1920, decide dedicar sua música ao Senhor, incorporando o blues e o spirituals (veja aqui) aos hinos cristãos. A essa nova mistura, Dorsey dá o nome de Gospel (god-spel: evangelho, boas novas). "Peace in the Valley" foi a primeira música escrita por ele, originalmente para ser cantada por Mahalia Jackson e posteriormente gravada por diversos cantores.

     Essa foi a primeira música do gênero gospel, que hoje é um termo usado para se referir a qualquer música evangélica, embora seja originalmente a junção dos hinos religiosos com a música popular, inserindo instrumentos que eram considerados não-eclesiásticos, como guitarra e bateria, no louvor à Deus. - Fim do mistério!
